Awareness of the significance of taking care of day-to-day mental health concerns was at an all-time high during the extraordinary times of the coronavirus epidemic. Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health problems, but our understanding of them has changed. To be sure, it’s on the list of health concerns, but we have a long way to go. The World Health Organization estimates that for every 10,000 people in India, there are 2443 DALYs lost due to poor mental health. According to the same data set, the suicide rate after adjusting for age is 21.1. The World Health Organization predicts that the cost to the economy of dealing with people’s mental health will be $1.03 trillion between 2012 and 2030.

Making mental health a priority

One’s mood, actions, and emotions may all be influenced by their mental health. Researchers have shown that depression might have even more of a detrimental influence on health than actual physical harm. It has been shown through scientific research in a number of different areas. Nothing is worthwhile if it may disrupt a person’s regular life and their capacity to succeed.

The health of our whole being is tied to our state of mind. A lack of attention to this issue may have negative effects on both one’s professional and personal health. Putting yourself first when your thoughts are all over the place might be difficult, but aren’t we experts at conquering the bizarre? Allowing an event to dictate how you behave in life is counterproductive and won’t improve your relationships with others. You need to hone your abilities, advance in your profession, and take time off to recharge your batteries. Improving our mental health is essential because of the obstacles that depression and anxiety may create in bringing out our best selves.

Best ways to improve mental health and well-being

To overcome the mental health issues they are facing, people use various methods. Some people find relief via the tried-and-true practise of secluding themselves inside until things seem normal, while others find relief through rigorous physical activity. Mental health professionals, however, advise against using such methods of escape. A bottom-up approach is required.

Keep a notebook in which you may record your thoughts and feelings as they occur during the day. Take a look at your written reflections one week and one month afterwards. You’ll start to see the trajectory of your ideas and learn to follow it soon enough. There is a silver lining to every cloudy circumstance. Getting that would be great for your emotional well-being.

Break out of your confinement. Relax by taking a stroll in the nearby park or watching the dawn or sunset. Although it may be challenging at first, perseverance is essential. Help others and engage in new pursuits. To rediscover your sense of joy, it might be helpful to go on a walk or other activity. The importance of getting enough sleep cannot be overstated, particularly for those struggling with mental health concerns. Attempt some yoga or deep breathing exercises. As a result, you’ll be able to relax your muscles, calm your mind, and get a good night’s rest.

Role of stakeholders

The efforts of the government and even social media influencers to raise public understanding of the importance of mental health have been much appreciated. The process begins at the individual’s residence. Cooperation from loved ones with mental health issues requires compassion and understanding on our parts if we are to make mental health a worldwide priority. Communicating with them is the first step in learning about their predicament and putting yourself in their shoes. Don’t pass judgement or start an argument, just listen. The most important thing you can do for someone with mental health concerns is to earn their trust.
