Technology made online transactions a very common phenomenon and ideology of e-wallet. The concept of online payment has been a successful concept, one such company which deals in it is ‘MobiKwik’. Upasana Taku, a B.Tech student, and aspiring entrepreneur is an e-wallet company co-founder. The company was launched as a recharge platform, and soon became the face of mobile wallets in the country.
Upasana finished her schooling in Surat and then completed her B. Tech from NIT, Jalandhar. Also, she did her MS at Stanford University, US. She started her work journey at HSBC in San Diego. She was very successful in the field of marketing, forecast, and market research. Soon she joined US Paypal and learned about the payment system of the Americas, Europe, and Asia during her tenure. She also gained knowledge about risk detection and fraud management, user experience, and design.
In 2008, she no longer wanted to be part of the corporate drone and wanted to come back to India and contribute to the Indian startup ecosystem. This was also one of the turning points of her career. in the year 2009 along with her future husband Bipin, she became a co-founder of MobiKwik where she initially worked with many aspects of the business. at a time when people were dependent on physical cash for a trivial amount, Taku revolutionized the whole concept by bringing up physical wallets in the picture in a broadway.
Initially started as 6 members in the company, they became a growing company at an exceptional pace and were a team of 35 by 2012. As the milestone for the company, as they received first company’s funding of about $5million and they shifted to Udyog Vihar, Gurgaon with nearly 50 employees. The second round of funding came in the year 2015; they were able to draw funding of $25 million from Sequoia Capital, American Express, Tree Line Asia, and Cisco Investment.
The third round of investment came in for Taku’s company of no less than $50 million was raised from Net1, GMO payment gateway, Mediatek, Sequoia Capital, and TreeLine Asia. This was a remarkable achievement for the company as it was enough for them to make a big name in the circuit.
