Don’t you think some people are born to be the source of motivation to guide this world to become a better place to live? Most of the time, they are said to be thinkers in pioneering ways and possess different perspectives toward life when compared to others. Their dedication and commitment are powerful enough to convert their difficulties into thriving possibilities. And here, we have brought to you an overwhelming story of Deepa Malik who has become an ideal for many aspiring women athletes setting forth her ideology— ability beyond disability. Today, Deepa Malik is a well-recognized name in the sports world, and what makes her story worth recognition is her braving paralysis and spinal cord tumor treatment for over 20 years.
At an early age, she was diagnosed with a deadly tumor in her spinal cord that needed to be removed that left her in a wheelchair during her young age for the rest of her life. Though she never imagined entering the sports world, her devotion and zealous attitude helped her stand her ground.
Deepa was born like a normal child but at the age of 5, her life took an unexpected turn when doctors diagnosed her with a spinal tumour for which she has to undergo three major surgeries. As the tumor was removed successfully, she got paralyzed below her chest. Despite her life being bound to a wheelchair now, it could not confine her free spirit to it. She became adamant to not live a miserable life due to her disability. Hence, she started a catering business and successfully managed it for seven years. It was at the age of 36 when Deepa astoundingly turned towards sports. She shut down her business and went to pursue her ‘then-budding endeavor’ i.e. to become a well-acclaimed athlete. When asked what made her choose this field, she responds, “Sports gives me a fighting spirit and makes me lead a healthy survival not only physically but mentally too.”
Indeed, her journey has been phenomenal but what has been even more inspiring is the love, care, and support she received from her family and especially her husband. She reminisces that when she revealed the unfortunate news of her permanent disability to her husband just before her third surgery, her husband stated, “I will carry you in my arms.” This touched her so deeply that she decided to fight any circumstances and emerge as a strong warrior.
And today, she has bagged 58 national and 18 international medals to her name. Padma Shri award 2017, Arjun award 2012, President Role Model Award 2014, and a lot more to mention have recognized her exuberant talent. The brightened smile on her face sheerly spreads positivity to wherever she goes. Her motivational story has inspired people to look beyond disabilities because nothing could be denied to unwavering and hard-working people.
