Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh and Howrah in West Bengal were two other cities where demonstrations became violent. Even while Srinagar was shut down, demonstrations in Delhi and other regions of Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Bihar, and Maharashtra remained calm.
The police shot in the air to disperse a throng pelting stones in Ranchi, Jharkhand, as demonstrations erupted in various towns and cities nationwide over disparaging remarks to the Prophet by former BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal.
Disputes erupted in the Indian cities of Prayagraj and Howrah as well. Despite the blockade in Kashmir, there were no violent demonstrations in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Bihar, and Maharashtra.
Internet access was unavailable for the remainder of the day on Saturday and into the early hours of Monday in Ranchi and Howrah.
Imam Shahi dissociated himself from the demonstration in Delhi and appealed for peace. “He has also requested that authorities begin recovery processes where the public property was damaged,” a state government spokeswoman said. Awanish Kumar Awasthi, UP DGP Devendra Singh Chauhan, and other high-ranking officials attended the meeting.
As reported by the UP Police, 136 persons were detained throughout the state in connection with the demonstrations, including 45 in Saharanpur, 37 in Prayagraj, 23 in Ambedkarnagar, and 20 in Hathras, 7 in Moradabad, and 4 in Firozabad.
