Here’s all you need to know about these four potential members of the Upper House of Parliament:
PT Usha
Legendary Indian athlete PT Usha has established and broken several national and Asian records in the field of sports. An inspiring figure for young ladies who want to pursue a career in athletics, she was born and raised in Kerala’s Kozhikode area.
At the World Junior Invitational Meet, Asian Championships, and Asian Games, PT Usha, the ‘Payyoli Express,’ represented India and took home gold.
She finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics, falling only 1/100th of a second short of earning India its first track and field medal. In addition to the Arjuna award, she’s also been awarded the Padma Shri.
Ilaiyaraaja
Ilaiyaraaja is considered one of the finest Indian musicians of the contemporary era, having created more than 7,000 songs for more than 1,000 films and performing in over 20,000 performances throughout the world.
Due to his caste and his place of birth, Ilaiyaraaja, a Dalit from the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, has had to endure a great deal of suffering. Despite this, he never let obstacles get in the way of his success, and he went on to become one of the most recognizable artists in the nation.
In 2018, the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, was bestowed to him in recognition of his musical skill. Padma Bhushan is another honor he has received. In addition, Ilaiyaraaja has won five national awards.
Veerendra Heggade
Veerendra Heggade has been the administrator of the Dharmasthala temple in Karnataka since he was twenty years old. He has been a philanthropist for more than five decades and has spearheaded several rural developments and self-employment programs.
After receiving the Padma Vibhushan in 2015, Heggade, who is now 73 years old, established the Rural Development and Self-Employment Training Institute (RDSETI) to educate rural youth about self-employment options. The Rural Self-Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs) were reproduced by the Center and opened around the nation.
A project for rural development and self-employment in Karnataka has also been conceptualized by him: Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project. More than 6 lakh SHGs and 49 lakh people are now involved in the programme. More than 25 schools and institutions are under his leadership, providing high-quality education at low costs to a wide range of students.
His other accomplishments include leading multiple campaigns to improve access to high-quality healthcare, promote social justice, and protect our nation’s cultural assets.
V Vijayendra Prasad
India’s leading screenwriter and film director, Vijayendra Prasad, was born in the Kovvur region of Andhra Pradesh. RRR, Baahubali, and Bajrangi Bhaijaan are just a few of the high-grossing Telugu and Hindi films he has worked on.
A few of his films have become national blockbusters despite their narrow regional appeal, which is an extremely uncommon occurrence for a screenwriter. Bajrangi Bhaijaan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan received Prasad the Filmfare Award for best narrative in 2016. One of India’s most well-known film filmmakers, SS Rajamouli, is his son.
