August 15th, 2022, marks the 76th Independence Day (75th Anniversary) commemorating the Independence of India. On this day in 1947, India gained independence from the British Empire, and its first prime minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of Red Fort in Delhi. It is Independence Day 75th anniversary this year. People all around the country gather on this day to honour the memory of the brave men and women who fought for independence and led the way to its successful achievement.
An array of initiatives was launched by Indian independence activists, all of which contributed to the abolition of slavery. Our brave freedom warriors deserve the credit for their unwavering willingness to sacrifice themselves in the struggle for independence from British domination.
In honour of the event, let’s reflect on the importance of this day in history.
History of Independence Day
Since 1757, when the British established their colonial control over India, they had stayed in power for over two full centuries. In 1619, the British Empire established a trading post in the city of Surat, Gujarat, under the name The East India Company. They started oppressing the Indians, which planted the idea of a revolution in their minds. Across the country, independence fighters and leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and Bhagat Singh sounded the call for revolution.
The fact that India was controlled by the British for almost two centuries is common knowledge. Around the turn of the seventeenth century, British merchants arrived in India and established the East India Company in Surat. Eventually, they planned to expand their dominion throughout all of India. Many conflicts were fought over the following two centuries against these British people.
Some of the most well-known liberation fighters, including Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandrashekhar Azad, and a few others, significantly altered the British strategy. The Indian uprising of the 1940s was so violent and antagonistic against the British that the latter were forced to evacuate the country.
Significance of Independence Day 2022
On 4 July 1947, the British House of Commons tabled the Indian Independence Bill, which was subsequently approved within 15 days. The end of British sovereignty in India was a watershed moment on 15 August 1947. The first time the tricolour flag was raised, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru did it from the Red Fort in Delhi. The Prime Minister has traditionally addressed the country after hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort on Independence Day.
