On Saturday, Sanket Mahadev Sargar, Gururaja Poojary, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, and Bindyarani Sorokhaibam made it a memorable day for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Glasgow.

Ace Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, representing India in the CWG 2022 in Birmingham, has once again raised India’s international profile. On Saturday, she won a gold medal in the 47 kg women’s division with a snatch and clean and jerk total of 201 kg.

Chanu had a significant advantage over the rest of the field. The snatch was out of the question when she lifted 84 kg on her first attempt. With her second effort, she not only improved her personal best but also destroyed the Commonwealth Games record and the Commonwealth record with a lift of 88 Kgs.

Even though Chanu stated she had a game plan going into the Games, she noted the absence of competition and top-tier opponents made things a little dull.

It seemed clear to me that the Commonwealth Games would be a piece of cake,” he said. But I came here with a strategy: I’m going to concentrate on improving myself in this competition so that I can prepare better for future events.

However, Chanu was cited by TOI as adding, “It can become a little dull when there are no top opponents and no battle.”

To clarify her ‘boring’ comment, Chanu said that “this competition was about me. “This tournament is about you, about the effort you have done,” said Sir (coach Vijay Sharma) And it felt great. My mind was at ease, knowing that whatever I’ve worked on (I need to concentrate on that) would continue to develop in the future. That was how I felt when doing my lifts.”

Chanu has now won three Commonwealth Games medals, after her silver in Glasgow in 2014 and her gold in Gold Coast in 2018. She is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the CWG 2022, which is now underway.

Anil Khanna, the interim president of the IOA, said: “Mirabai Chanu has done an excellent job of meeting the high expectations that have been placed on her, and we are pleased to witness the fruits of her and her team’s hard work today.

“Even better, she pushed herself to lift 90 kg. Despite the disappointing outcome, the IOA commends Ms Chanu for her dedication to pushing the limit and raising the standard as one of India’s greatest athletes.
