In 1962, Dr. Radhakrishnan was elected President of India. On September 5th, a few of his friends and pupils approached him, asking if they might celebrate his birthday with him. Instead of quietly celebrating his birthday on August 15, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan said, “It would be my pretentious honour if 5th September is scrutinized as Teachers’ Day.” The fact that the President of India would ask for such a thing demonstrates Dr. S. Radhakrishnan’s deep respect for educators. Since then, September 5 has been recognized as Teachers’ Day in India.
Students celebrate their teachers with a variety of events on Teachers Day.
