In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “reviewed the situation of Human Resources in all departments and ministries.”

Because of the high incidence of young unemployment, the government stated on Tuesday that it would hire 10 lakh individuals in “mission mode” over the next year and a half.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “reviewed the situation of Human Resources in all departments and ministries.”

“He also asked that the Government do recruitment of 10 lakh persons in mission mode in next 1.5 years,” the PMO added.

Home Minister Amit Shah wrote on Twitter that “the foundation of New India is its young force. Shri Modi is striving consistently to empower them. The young would have fresh hope and confidence thanks to Shri Modi’s instruction to recruit 10 lakh people in mission mode across all government agencies and ministries in 1.5 years.’

‘After evaluating several GoI departments and ministries, @PMOIndia orders the recruitment of 10 lakh young people within the next 1.5 years,’ Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated.” Giving opportunity to the youth in public administration is welcome.”

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar characterized the news as a “historic decision” and said it is in the “interest of the youth.” He said that he was following orders from the Prime Minister to quickly fill all vacancies in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

The news comes at a time when the unemployment rate for youngsters (aged 15-29 years) in metropolitan areas has been hovering at around 20 per cent for the previous few quarters.

According to the Quarterly Bulletin of Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), provided by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the young unemployment rate, according to current weekly status, was at 20.8 per cent in urban areas during October-December 2021. On the other hand, the MoSPI’s annual PLFS report, which was issued on Tuesday, showed that the total youth unemployment rate was 12.9% in July-June 2020-21, with urban youth unemployment rates at 18.5% and rural youth unemployment rates at 10.7%.

Official statistics suggest that every fifth job was vacant in March 2019, almost a year before the Covid-19 outbreak. According to the Central Government Employees’ Annual Report on Pay and Allowances for 2018-19, as of March 1, 2019, there were 31.43 lakh regular Central Government Civilian Employees in position (including Union Territories), compared to the sanctioned strength of 40.66 lakh, with approximately 22.69 per cent of the positions being vacant.

Although the number of openings is considerable, there has been no increase in the rate of recruiting.
