In our humble opinion, nothing beats the rush of getting a needle poked through your skin for a body piercing, rising fashion 2022. Among the various ways to express yourself through body modification, they’re relatively low risk and just plain ol’ fun.
1. Asymmetry
Gone are the days of rocking identical piercings on both ears. Now, it’s all about asymmetry, says Samantha Alvarado, the director of nursing and piercing innovation. While this piercing style isn’t exactly new, 2022 will see the trend continue with people randomizing their placements even more. Go for it if you want to get second or third holes on one lobe but not the other! The less rhyme and reason to your piercings, the better, it is — and that’s its beauty.
2. Ear curations
Ear curations involve giving the piercer the creative freedom to choose multiple piercings for you while taking into account your aesthetic and your ear’s anatomy to figure out the best placements and jewellery. Sometimes these curations also involve adding new jewellery to already existing piercings to ensure everything works together. A person is seeking out “full-blown ear styling” rather than coming in with pre-determined placements because the average person does not always know what they want.
3. Septum piercing
It’s no surprise that septum piercings rank number one in popularity today: The nose ring is worn by celebs like Bella Thorne, Zoë Kravitz, and Debby Ryan. The septum is a thin part of cartilage that runs down the centre of your nose and separates your nostrils, so the piercing is on either side of the septum. If nose studs aren’t your thing, perhaps you’re more into septum piercings? While many girls opt for a simple single gold hoop, many notches with this multi-stranded ring. Septum rings are a perfect way to take a simple t-shirt from bland to glam.
4. Flat Helix
Folks are becoming more interested in receiving multiple piercings at once rather than just one. Right now, the piercing trends of 2022 are being influenced by the excitement and relief of returning to travel, celebrations, and concerts with new trends of bold self-expression say Lisa Bubbers, co-founder of piercing studio Studs where they focus exclusively on ear piercings, shares. That’s why she predicts that a trio of piercings on the flat helix will be big in the new year.
5. Constellations
Constellations are nothing new to the body-art scene, but the trend will still be going strong in 2022. As this is a specialty, constellations have been done, nearly every day. What does that mean, exactly? Constellation ear piercings are just a cluster of three or more piercings that spread across the ear in a constellation-like pattern. These can be done anywhere on the ear and are done both on the lobes and cartilage. “I usually work on one ear at a time for healing purposes,” a piercing specialist says. “Even before the pandemic, I was doing constellation piercings. I’m doing a lot of those. I’m also seeing a lot more men wanting to come in and get constellation piercings done.”
6. Eyebrow Piercing
Another of the most common facial piercing types, eyebrow piercing, can serve as a trendy companion to your ear piercings. Or, if you’re brave/patient enough, an extension of them. If you’re so inclined and willing to pay for multiple sessions, you could make the constellation trend extend across your eyebrows. However, as with septum piercings, you should expect a lengthy period of aftercare. This healing period can last anywhere between two to three months at a minimum.
7. Naval Piercing
After ear piercings, navel (or belly) piercings are one of the most popular asks right now, according to Thompson. Many clients have decided to re-pierce their navels as a nod to the past and a way to show off personal style.
“I’ve been talking clients into putting small, dainty gold hoops in lately,” a piercing specialist says. “And a lot of times they end up loving it.”
Butterfly clips, colour-blocked hair, and crop tops. Yep, the 90s are back. If you were a child in the 90s, like I was, then you’ll remember the first time you saw your beloved pop icons, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, be photographed in midriff-showing outfits to display their sparkly navel rings. We 90s kids begged our parents to let us get our belly buttons pierced.
8. Conch Piercing
A conch piercing is placed in the centre part of the ear and can be either an inner or outer conch style. While it might feel like everyone is getting a conch piercing, check with your piercer to make sure it’s right for you. “We’ve seen more and more people come into Studs requesting a conch piercing, so we think this is a trend to keep an eye on for fall and winter,” says a piercing specialist. “The piercing is done on the inner part of your ear, so it’s a subtle but fun addition to any earscape, especially with more decorative piercing jewellery.”
Where the hole goes can depend on the shape of your ear. These piercings also take a long time to heal, up to even nine months, so you’ll want to talk a lot about aftercare. If you do decide to take the plunge, both a stud and a tiny hoop look chic as hell. Unsurprisingly, Studs hawks a vast array of cute stud earrings.
HOW TO FIGURE OUT THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU
While we can’t decide which piercing or jewellery to get, we can give you some quick pointers on how to decide which is right for you:
- First, think if there’s any piercing or jewellery that you’ve been eyeing for a while. If it’s a piece of jewellery you’ve been lusting after, think of where that piece of jewellery would look best and which piercings utilize that type of jewellery.
- Next, think of your personal style, does the piercing or jewellery you’re thinking of go with it? Is your style always changing so do you need a versatile piercing that you can change out the jewellery often when it’s healed?
Most importantly, though, consult with your piercer. They can help determine which piercings are suitable based on your anatomy.
