Austria is a wonderful nation to see and a location that’s so much more than its main city, Vienna. Now, that’s not saying Vienna is horrible (it’s absolutely fantastic) but there truly is a bucket load of other gorgeous and scenic sites to visit. That’s why I wanted to present you some of my absolute favourites and finest sites in Austria to visit on your next vacation.
Perched inside central Europe, Austria is a very tiny nation that’s quite simple to go to see on a road trip. Though don’t let its size throw you off, it has so many beautiful and easily the greatest spots in Austria to see strewn all around the region.
That being said, with so many locations to explore, it might really be challenging to prioritise on your vacation. This is why I wanted to offer some extremely great sites I hope you’ll adore.
Take a look, below, at some of the top sites in Austria to visit.
1. Vienna
Okay, so we can’t talk about the greatest locations to visit in Austria without mentioning Vienna. What’s more, Vienna is a stunning city to visit.
Since we’ve been to Vienna several times, we’ve fallen in love with how laid-back, old, and cool the city is. It has a lot to offer. Be sure to tour the old town, Schönbrunn Palace, and the State Opera House when you arrive (which are reasonably priced).
After that, proceed to the Museum Quarter and explore the city’s many treasures.
You may also take a hotrod tour of Vienna if that doesn’t grab your attention. It’s so much fun to drive about the city in your own little dinky automobile!
And don’t forget about the Buschenschank experience, where you’ll feast on the greatest wines and delicacies from Nussberg Hill’s own vineyard, on a Sunday afternoon! It’s a wonderful pleasure.
Make a stop at Griechenbeisl for supper; it’s delectable. People used to sign the walls here, and you can still see Wagner, Beethoven, and Mozart’s autographs all over the ceilings to this day.
A six-course supper of Viennese escargot awaits you at Gugumuck (on the suburbs of Vienna)! Yes, a snail-based six-course feast (including dessert). I’m pleased I had the opportunity to experience it.
2. Ehrwald
Ehrwald is one of the nicest spots in Austria to visit if you’re a fan of the great outdoors.
Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, looms above this border town in the far north of Switzerland.
Make the most of your time in the area by exploring the many paths that wind through it. Try Holzerstubn’s beef dumpling stew afterward. It’s a real pleasure for the soul.
3. Hohenems
One of Austria’s top destinations for history buffs is Hohenemes, located in the western part of the country.
Now, the Altems Castle, built in the 12th century, is a lovely place to take a walk. The almost 500-year-old Stadtpfarrkirche is yet another must-see attraction. You’ll be spoiled for choice with the abundance of historic structures in the area.
Even better, the majestic Austrian Alps surround Hohenems. In other words, no matter the season, you’ll have no shortage of places to go skiing in the winter or hiking on the trails in the summer.
4. Hallstatt4.
Even though Hallstatt does claim to be Austria’s oldest settlement, I don’t know for sure. Hallstatt, on the other hand, is a sight to see!
Because of its abundance of mountain huts and charming alleyways, Hallstatt has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.
As the railway station is on the opposite side of the lake, it may be a bit of a challenge to get into town. As a result, taking a ferry to explore the town for the day is definitely an option. Just make sure you don’t miss the final boat return.
After arrival, take a stroll through the narrow alleyways, relax in the centre plaza, and take in the stunning scenery.
You may also visit the Dachstein Ice Caves, which are only a short drive away. They’re awe-inspiring. It’s not for the faint of heart, since there are over 600 stairs to trek up here.
5. Wachau
Wachau is a region that is often overlooked when discussing Austria, but it should be. It’s only 90 minutes from Vienna, yet it’s a gorgeous location full with vineyards, river walks, and mediaeval castles.
Once you’ve arrived, take a stroll along the Wachau World Heritage Trail and have a glass of wine at Spitz, Joching, or the Holzapfel Vineyards. Finally, you’ve worked hard for it with all those steps!
Try the classic Austrian meal at Gasthof Goldenes Schiff (in Spitz). We had no choice but to roll ourselves out of this place!
